The children in the activity you lead (on the carpet) require your constant intervention to ensure they are engaged and can do the task. For what reasons can this be problematic? How could you plan it differently?
During my lesson I gave the students an activity
where I distributed number flash card on the carpet and asked each one of the
students to show me a number. Some of the student found the activity a little
hard and some of them didn’t actually enjoyed the activity I had to engage the
students by praising them and giving them positive reinforcement to get other
students to get excited and participate in the activity. Many of them wanted to
play and some didn’t actually understood what are they required to do. I think
this kind of activities are not engaging the students enough and it won’t get
them into thinking and being focused in the activity.
For my next lesson I will make sure to make the activities more
engaging by make it a bit challenging to the students, for an example I will
put the students in two teams and they will challenge each other and whoever
gets the right answer will get a point. Also I can flip the cards and let the
students choose any of the cards and say what number is this. And in addition I
can add the Arabic numbers to make it very challenging to them and that will
engage them to participate and wanting to be a part of the game. Moreover next
time I will make sure that I have activities for all of the different level and
abilities that I have in the classroom to let all of the students get a turn
and participate more during the carpet time and the whole group activities.
You identify the issues (as we discussed). You could mention that it could be problematic because it means you have to focus solely on one group and cannot spend enough time with the others. You say that some did not understand what to do - why is that? Why do you think this kind of activity is not engaging for the children? You suggest some possible ways you might make the activity more interesting and competitive. Can you try to do this in your future planning, it would tie in excellently with your action research and provide you with some great evidence of your practice both for your research report and your eportfolio.
ReplyDeleteYou NEED to make sure you write between 300 & 400 words in your next posting. You should use the reflective cycle to ensure you have enough detail in your writing. Your response to Alia and Aysha should be 200 to 300 words so remember to check.
First of all, it is a good idea to use the both languages to introduce the numbers for kg students in the next lesson. That because, they are still at the beginning of the academic year and they need a brief revision. Also, this way will help you to engage all the students' ability with you in the class. In addition, using praising and positive reinforcement through your lesson were a good things. That because, students encourage when they get something or hear positive words.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, instead of using flash cards try to use something more enjoyable for students (Tangible activity). For example, write the numbers in the cupcake paper and let the students count and match it by using the pompoms. The aim of this activity is to read the number inside each of the cupcake and use the pompoms to accurately represent it. Moreover, let students through the dice and count how many they get and then ask them to match it with tidy bear or anything else. The aim of this activity is to count the dots in the dice and match it with the right objects. Also, this activity will let students move instead of sitting all the time on the carpet
First of all, the activity was very good to start the lesson and to engage the students. For the carpet time, you have to use a clear and quick activity to catch the students’ attention and let them respond and participate with you. In addition, I liked when you used praises for the students and gave them positive reinforcement, because this can motivate other students to participate with you as you want even by trying, because the students like to please their teacher. Also, using simple instructions and giving them an example of what they have to do can help you to achieve your goal and make this activity more understandable for them so they can respond more positively.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, in my opinion, for your next lesson, using more challenging activities in the carpet time will not help students to respond the way you want because it will take a long time. Instead of that, you can give them touchable things to do an activity. For example, you can give them a dice to through and count the number. By this activity, students will be motivated and engaged by waiting their turn to play this game. Also, this activity can help students review the numbers and helps you check the students’ level.
